The Negative Effects of Native American Mascots

Thesis Statement: The use of Native Americans as mascots for sports teams is detrimental to the Native American race, their culture, and to all of the people that are subjected to it.

No matter whether they go by a name as specific as the Seminoles or a name as broad as the Indians, the use of Native Americans as mascots for sports teams is detrimental to the Native American race, their culture, and to all of the people that are subjected to it. People tend to make numerous stereotypes regarding Native Americans because of all of the false ideas about them and their culture that are presented by sports teams using them as mascots. Things that are considered traditions for sports teams such as the tomahawk chop hand gesture or a halftime “tribal” dance by a Native American mascot serve to mock a culture that has already endured so much hardship.
