Paying College Athletes

The idea of whether or not to compensate college athletes beyond a scholarship is a longstanding issue.  In recent years it has become increasingly controversial as instances of athletes violating NCAA rules have become almost a regular occurrence.  The issue is not a simple one, with many implications involved with both sides of the argument, but the system that is currently in place is flawed.  Under it athletes are treated as a whole, not individuals, leading to compensation that doesn’t match their contribution to their respective universities.  In order to fairly compensate college athletes and stop the recurring string of violations, the NCAA and its universities need to start treating the athletes as individuals, looking at what each athlete actually contributes to the university.
