Accuracy of American Drinking Laws

Thesis:
     Although the law that mandates the minimum drinking age in the United States is successful in some circumstances at helping protect America’s youth from the harmful effects of alcohol, the law does not successfully restrict and protect the youth of America in the way is was meant to because of the outbreaks of binge drinking and unsupervised drinking, with each of these issues harming many teenagers a year, therefore this law may not be the best restriction for helping keep American teens safe from the harmful effects of alcohol.

 Introduction:
     American drinking laws has been a debatable topic throughout the last few centuries of American culture. Specifically within America's drinking law is the minimum drinking age that mandates the age in which the purchase, possession, and consumption of alcohol. The law was made with the mindset to protect America's youth from the harmful effects of alcohol, when in fact, it may be causing more harm that protection. Although the law that mandates the minimum drinking age in the United States is successful in some circumstances at helping protect America’s youth from the harmful effects of alcohol, the law does not successfully restrict and protect the youth of America in the way is was meant to because of the outbreaks of binge drinking and unsupervised drinking, with each of these issues harming many teenagers a year, therefore this law may not be the best restriction for helping keep American teens safe from the harmful effects of alcohol. Statical data and specific examples show that both binge drinking and unsupervised drinking are two situations that have increased due to the underage drinking law, and as a result, many teenagers are dying from alcohol poisoning simply because they lack the education and responsibility to know how to consume alcohol at a safe rate in an protected environment. Teenagers will continue to illegally purchase and consume, just at dangerous levels in dangerous places.
